Discovering your brand identity is a lot like discovering your own. When you create a business or decide to rebrand, it’s important to know who you are. You have to define what voice, values, and personality best represent what you want your brand to be to your customers. Are you family-oriented, like a dentist or children’s clothing store? Or do you choose to emphasize your business’s integrity, as a bank or insurance company would? Or are you a non-profit needing to communicate your cause for fundraising? Customers like knowing who they’re working with–they want a personable experience every time they interact with your brand – even for non-profits. In order to provide that experience, you have to clearly define your brand’s identity for yourself.
To begin this process, engage in this simple exercise: pick five words that represent your company, or that you want to represent your company. These should be your core values–what you want every customer to associate with your business every time they see your commercial or a billboard with your logo. It could be helpful to have a few, more established, brands as examples of where you want your company to be in 5 or 10 years. Think about the five words those brands would use to describe themselves, and how they convey those values in their advertising, customer service, and the products and services they offer.
For example, consider the tech company, Apple. They have a very recognizable brand that they took the time to craft and refine over decades of conducting business. Their logo is simple, yet instantly brings their products and services to the mind of every person who sees it. If they were to choose five words that could describe their brand identity, they might be:
- Innovative
- Dependable
- Community-oriented
- Versatile
- Global
These are qualities Apple takes care to convey and uphold with every sale, every ad, and every customer interaction. That level of consistency should be your goal when it comes to your own brand identity.
